Hayden will discuss the debate over the best way to pursue social change. He argues that social change begins at the invisible margins, gives rise to social movements, and then inevitably becomes involved in mainstream politics, where it is often seen as too radical by some and too moderate by others. Hayden will offer examples including the Bill of Rights, the 19th Amendment, and the Sixties reforms leading to the election of Barack Obama.

Tom Hayden currently writes for The Nation and is the author and editor of 18 books, including The Long Sixties: From 1960 to Barack Obama (Paradigm, 2009), as well as numerous articles for the Los Angeles Times, the Boston Globe, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. He has recently taught at Scripps College and Pitzer College in Claremont, Occidental College, and Harvard University’s Institute of Politics.

Hayden served 18 years in the California legislature, chairing key committees on the environment, higher education and labor. He was described as “the conscience of the Senate” in California, and “the single greatest figure of the 1960s student movement” in the New York Review of Books. He is credited with popularizing the concept of participatory democracy.

Tom Hayden is one of the nation’s leading voices against the Afghanistan-Pakistan War, as he was during the Vietnam War 40 years ago and is organizing a campaign to ensure that the wars are central to the presidential debates in 2012.
