Kid’s Café: On-Campus Service Opportunity

Title: Kid’s Café: On-Campus Service Opportunity
Location: Carr Center
Description: Kid’s Café: On-Campus Service Opportunity

Friday, January 28, 2011
8:00 pm, Carr Center

Kids Café is run by the Salvation Army. It is a place for children and teens in Manchester to get homework help, have dinner, participate in fun activities, and foster friendships. Most of the kids come from underprivileged families and backgrounds and the meal they receive at Kids Café may be the only one they get that day.
The Kids Café teens will be coming to campus for a round-robin basketball tournament between Kids Café teens and St. A’s volunteers for fun and good natured competition. Come join the fun as a player, ref, or energetic fan. Many of the teen girls from Kids Café are hoping to get a campus tour so that they can see what the college experience is all about. Join these kids for a tour that will involve some exposure to educational activity appropriate for teens.
Student volunteers will be needed for this on campus service opportunity. If you are interested in assisting with this event, please contact the Meelia Center at meeliacenter@anselm.edu or 641-7108.

Start Time: 20:00

Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett
Christpher McElroen’s celebrated iconic post-Katrina nationally touring production

Friday, February 11, 2011
3:00 pm, Auditorium – Dana Center

Originally produced in association with The Classical Theatre of Harlem

In November 2007, Christopher McElroen partnered with renowned visual artist Paul Chan and New York public arts organization Creative Time to reach out into the New Orleans community to stage free site specific performances of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot in the Katrina-devastated neighborhoods of Gentilly and the Lower Ninth Ward. The Times-Picayune, The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Nation, Artforum and NPR all followed the story of Godot in New Orleans, calling the project “incisive,” “inspired,” “remarkable,” “exemplary,” “ever-inventive,” and “multifaceted… various in form and meaning, communal, physically ephemeral yet socially and politically continuing.” Director Christopher McElroen, along with members of the cast of Waiting for Godot, gives an engaging multimedia presentation about this extraordinary community development through the arts initiative.
Digging deeper and using Godot in New Orleans as a roadmap, McElroen speaks to the challenges of producing site-specific theatre and the importance of building community ownership of political and socially relevant art and theatre.

Lecture: “Revolution, Reform, and Pathways to Social Change”

Title: Lecture: “Revolution, Reform, and Pathways to Social Change”
Location: Auditorium – NHIOP
Description: Lecture: “Revolution, Reform, and Pathways to Social Change”
Tom Hayden, founder and director of the Peace and Justice Resource Center

Tuesday, February 8, 2011
6:00 pm, Auditorium – NHIOP

Hayden will discuss the debate over the best way to pursue social change. He argues that social change begins at the invisible margins, gives rise to social movements, and then inevitably becomes involved in mainstream politics, where it is often seen as too radical by some and too moderate by others. Hayden will offer examples including the Bill of Rights, the 19th Amendment, and the Sixties reforms leading to the election of Barack Obama.

Tom Hayden currently writes for The Nation and is the author and editor of 18 books, including The Long Sixties: From 1960 to Barack Obama (Paradigm, 2009), as well as numerous articles for the Los Angeles Times, the Boston Globe, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. He has recently taught at Scripps College and Pitzer College in Claremont, Occidental College, and Harvard University’s Institute of Politics.

Hayden served 18 years in the California legislature, chairing key committees on the environment, higher education and labor. He was described as “the conscience of the Senate” in California, and “the single greatest figure of the 1960s student movement” in the New York Review of Books. He is credited with popularizing the concept of participatory democracy.

Tom Hayden is one of the nation’s leading voices against the Afghanistan-Pakistan War, as he was during the Vietnam War 40 years ago and is organizing a campaign to ensure that the wars are central to the presidential debates in 2012.
